The British Royal Observatory is known for having a major role in the history of navigation and astronomy. It is situated in Greenwich Park, on a hill. It overlooks the river Thames. Since it played a very important role in astronomy, the longitudinal line passing through it was designed as the 0° meridian, also called the Prime Meridian. Owing to this, the Prime Meridian is also known as the Greenwich Meridian. The time of this longitude is called the Greenwich Mean Time.
