The Basilica of Bom Jesus Church is situated on the western side of Goa and known as one of the best displays of Portuguese architecture with its exquisite baroque modelling. Built in 1594 and consecrated in 1605 , the building of this church was one of the pathways which made the initiation of Christianity in India. The church is located in a town called Bainguinim situated in the Old Goa region. As the oldest church in Goa, the remains of St. Francis Xavier, who was a colleague of St. Ignatius Loyola with whom he founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) is kept in there.
The word ‘Bom Jesus' is used for the Ecce Homo in the same sense as the term ‘Holy Jesus’ in the countries of Portuguese colonization. The term was taken from the Latin dialogue of Pontius Pilate used in the narration of the Gospel of John during the crucifixion of Christ. Here, Jesus is portrayed as a soul who is bound and crowned with thorns during the journey towards the cross.
