Hint: The district which has the lowest population occupies an area of 4,102 square kilometres in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. The former name of this district is Coorg.

Complete Answer: The Kodagu district is located on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats of southwestern Karnataka. The total geographical area is 4,102 square kilometres and is surrounded by Kasaragod district of Kerala to its west, Kannur district of Kerala to its southwest, Wayanad district of Kerala to its south, Hassan district to its north, Dakshina Kannada district to its northwest and Mysore district to its east. According to 2001 census, the district had a population of 548,561 with 13.47 percent residing in the urban centres of the district, making it the least populous district of the state.

The Kodagu is a hilly area, the lowest elevation is 120 metres above sea-level, is divided into five administrative taluks, namely Madikeri, Virajpet, Somwarpet, Ponnampet, and Kushalnagar. The important river in this district is river Kaveri which originates at the Brahmagiri on the Coorg plateau of the Sahyadri range. It is assumed that it is the oldest river which has a youthful stage superimposed by large meanders.

Thus the correct answer is option (B).

Note: Coorg at present is an administrative district under the state of Karnataka, India but before 1956 it was an administratively separate state. Later on, it was merged with the Mysore state, now Karnataka.
