Where is thalamus located and what are its functions?

Hint: Thalamus is a modified stem which is located near the stalk of the flower, where they are divided into nodes and internodes. Thalamus is useful for supply of nutrients to the flower

usually thalamus is the abbreviated axis which has floral leaves attached to it
> It is nothing but pedicle or peduncle which has swollen ends
> It has both nodes and internodes
> The floral leaves are usually inserted to them in spiral forms
> In some flowers, thalamus is bit elongated
> Shape of the thalamus is different in different flowers.
> Thalamus is different shapes in different flowers
> For example in case of china rose and datura flower the thalamus is convex in shape
> In the case of rose flowers, thalamus is cup shaped ,whereas in the case of lotus flower, it has a spongy flat top.
> Based on the shape of the thalamus and mode of attachment of floral sets to gynoecium, the flowers are divided into following types
> Such as hypogynous, perigynous and epigynous
> In case of hypogynous flowers, the thalamus is done shaped and convex, whereas pistil is present on the top of the thalamus, floral sets are inserted below the pistil in the manner of one after the other Examples are China rose and datura
> In case of the perigynous flowers the thalamus is cup shaped or concave and where other floral parts such as stamens, petals and sepals all are placed around each other here the ovary is said to be inferior
> In case of epigynous flowers the thalamus is hollow, whereas other floral parts such as stamens, petals and sepals are placed around the pistil.
> In epigynous flowers also the ovary is inferior and some examples include the sunflower, tube rose etc.

Note: Some important functions of thalamus is, it mainly acts as a base where other floral parts of the flowers get attached to it and it is also important in transport of nutrients in flowers.
