Complete answer:
Tapi river with its total length of about 724 km, rises from the central part of India, Madhya Pradesh. It rises from the Satpura range in the Gawilgarh hills of the Deccan plateau from the south of Madhya Pradesh and flows across the Jalgaon plateau in the Maharashtra state of India. Tapi river flows nearly parallel to the Narmada river and the two of them are separated by the Satpura range. Tapi river is extended along 72°33’ to 78°17’ longitudes and 20°9’ to 21°50’ latitudes and is surrounded by Mahadev hills, Ajanta range, and Satmala hills.
Tapi river is the second largest river basin to drain westward while flowing through three major states of India, i.e., Maharashtra (51,504km2), Madhya Pradesh (9,804km2), Gujarat (3,837km2). It covers the majority of the region of Maharashtra state of about 80% and has its outlet in the Gulf of Khambhat in the Arabian Sea while flowing through the Gulf of Cambay and Surat city of Gujarat. The drainage area of the Tapi river in the respective three states is 51504km2 in Maharashtra, 9804km2 in Madhya Pradesh, and 3837km2 in Gujarat.
Tapi river basin is a highly cultivated region with the presence of widely dense forests in its plain region extending among east and southeast and while there is a hilly area with the presence of rich teak and timber trees in the Satpura range in north and northwest. The total forest area in the Tapi river basin covers approximately 25% of the total geographical area which is unevenly distributed. These forests act as the source of fire-wood, grass and serve as the good pasturing lands for the cattle. These forests also produce various items, such as bamboo, minerals, horns and hides, Tendu leaves, and gum.
