The development of classical music dominating the north of India is attributed to Tansen (Hindustani classical music). Tansen, who formed many ragas, was a vocalist and instrumentalist. He was the court singer of King Ram Chand of the State of Rewa, initially. It is said that after learning about his exceptional musical talent, Emperor Akbar turned him into his own musician. He went on to become one of the Navaratnas (Nine Gems) of Emperor Akbar's Mughal court. Many stories are connected with the life of Tansen. His ability to produce rain and fire by only using his musical skills is among the most popular ones. Whatever the legends may be, the fact that he was the best of all the musicians this country has ever created is not to be ignored.
Tansen had become very popular by this period. He sang often in front of Emperor Akbar, who was so fascinated by him that he demanded that Tansen join his court.
In 1556, Tansen went to Akbar's court, and soon became the Emperor's great favourite. Akbar will appeal to Tansen to sing during the day or night at any time. He would only step into Tansen's house very frequently to hear him practise. He gave him several gifts as well.

Note:There are several stories about soulful singing by Tansen. It is said that clouds would gather in seconds when he sang Meg Malhar Raga and it would start raining. He was also known for taming wild beasts with his mighty songs. Only by performing Deepak Raga can the most famous of his legends be about igniting a fire.
