Paiyampalli village is located in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. It is famous for its excavation sites where the remains of the Neolithic and the Megalithic period were found. The excavations in Paiyampalli were carried out by the Archaeological Survey. The excavation was headed by Shikaripura Ranganatha Rao in 1964-65 and 1967-68.
The excavation revealed two culture periods in the region which were named Period I and Period II. They were the Neolithic and Megalithic Periods respectively. The revelations of the Neolithic Period were further divided into Phase A and Phase B. Phase A showed bone tools, stone axes, grey pottery etc. Phase B showed drastic improvement in the economic conditions of the people. Bone tools were replaced with better tools and better constructions of huts were seen.
The people who settled here in the Neolithic period cultivated pulses and cereals. Traces of green gram and horse gram were found here. The Phase B of the excavation coincides with the Period II of the excavation i.e. the Megalithic Period. The Neolithic period dated back to roughly 1390 BC and the Megalithic period dates back to around 500 BC. The people in the megalithic period used to smelt iron and make weapons like sickle and spears, and tools like chisel and nails. A large amount of slag iron and iron ore was also seen during this period.
