WBCs are of many types that serve different functions.

Usually the white blood cells are colorless but they can still be viewed under the microscope as colored cells using special stains like eosin. So, they are called white because they naturally do not have any particular color as compared to red blood cells which are red in color.
Now, what does leukocytes actually mean –
If we go deep into the etymology and origin of the word leukocyte, it is composed of two Greek words “leukos” which means white and “cytos” which means cells. Thus leukocytes mean white cells of the blood.
