A magnet is a material that has the property of attracting certain types of metals. A magnet is of two types man made and natural. The property due to which a magnet attracts other metal is known as magnetism. The magnet just like earth has two poles north pole and south pole. The like poles in the magnet repel each other and the unlike poles in the magnet attract each other. This attraction creates a field between the north pole and the south pole as you can see in the figure given below.

This field that is created by the magnet has a certain limitation that is the magnetic field is effective at a certain distance, after a certain distance the magnetic field would be there but it would be ineffective. When a metal object which is sensitive to a magnet is brought closer, the metal object gets attracted towards it. This happens due to the fact that there is a magnetic field around the magnet which attracts a magnet when it is brought at a certain distance from the magnet. Here the metal experiences a force by the magnet due to the presence of a magnetic field which is produced by the magnet poles.

Magnets are always bipolar in nature i.e. they have two poles one is north and another is south pole. Even if one breaks the magnet the magnet will still have two poles. Scientists are still searching for unipolar magnets in the universe.
