Hint: In the chemical reactions, the reagents are mixed together to form products. The reagents may be in different states. Here the solutions after mixing forms two products. Therefore, it will be a chemical reaction.
Complete answer:
Here when we mix the two solutions, we receive two different products. From this condition we can identify that a chemical reaction is happening in between. When we consider the two solutions as an acid and base, we will get the solution.
Let the solution M be an acid and the solution TO be a base. Then their reaction can be depicted as;
${\text{ M}}{\text{ + O }} \to {\text{ Salt + Water}} \\
{\text{Acid}}\;\;\;\;\;\;{\text{ Base Products}} $
This reaction is called a neutralization reaction. In a neutralization reaction, an acid and base reacts to form salt and water. The most common neutralization reaction is carried out between the strong base sodium hydroxide and the strong acid hydrochloric acid. Their reaction can be shown as;
${\text{ HCl + NaOH }} \to {\text{ NaCl + }}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{\text{O}} \\
{\text{ Acid}}\;\;\;\;\;{\text{ Base Salt Water}} $
Neutralization reaction is an example of double displacement reaction. From the above example we can know that the \[{\text{C}}{{\text{l}}^{\text{ - }}}\] from the \[{\text{HCl}}\] is displaced from it and the combines with \[{\text{N}}{{\text{a}}^{\text{ + }}}\;{\text{in}}{\text{ NaOH}}\]. Likewise \[{{\text{H}}^{\text{ + }}}\] in \[{\text{HCl}}\] combines with OH in NaOH and we get the products as \[{\text{NaCl and }}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{\text{O}}\]. It is an irreversible process as the produced salt and water cannot be converted back to the acid and base.
Note: Neutralization reactions are exothermic in nature. Because the formation of water molecules releases energy.
An acid and base always react to form salt and water as products. This reaction has a lot of industrial applications.
In our daily life we can use so many products like shampoo, tooth paste, conditioner to neutralize the acids which are released from the bacteria.
