Hint: Silicon is usually a metalloid which means it can act as both metal and non metal. It is the second most abundant element in the earth's crust with a wide range of chemical and physical properties that makes it the most widely useful element. As it is used in many ways, we need to mention its usage more specifically. It belongs to the Carbon family.

Complete answer:
Before answering this question, let us have a wide look at the properties of silicon and then we will come to know about its uses. Pure silicon is a hard solid. It exists in two allotropic forms. It has a low melting point and is more reactive than diamond. Like Carbon,it forms chains. Coming to its uses, it is used as a semiconductor because of its atomic structure. It is used in many other electronic devices like transistors, circuits, diodes, solar energy devices and many others . In a solar cell, pure silicon is the basic unit as its structure can more effectively convert light energy into electric energy. It is also used in transistors as its properties can be easily modified to make transistors. It is also used in computer chips, bricks, engine blocks, machine tools etc. As it has many uses, we need to consider its specific scientific usage. So, the answer is silicon is used as semiconductor, transistor and also in photo electric devices

Note:
Silicon is a p block element and denoted as Si. It gets its name from the word silicis which means a hard stone. Silicon as a semiconductor performs better than other metals and the electric conductance gets better with rise in temperature. To improve the efficiency of semiconductors, silicon on insulator technology has been invented where silicon is present on the insulator.
