The world’s largest producer of cotton in India. There are a total of four species of cotton namely Gossypium Hirsutum, Gossypium Brbadense, Gossypium Arbodeum, and Gossypium Herbaceum. The Gossypium Hirsutum is also known as Upland cotton or Mexican cotton. Around 90% of the cotton is obtained from this kind of species. Gossypium barbadense is also called extra-long-staple cotton. It accounts for 8% of the production of cotton. Gossypium arboreum is also called tree cotton. It accounts for 2% of the production of cotton and Gossypium Herbaceum is also called Levant cotton. It accounts for less than 2% of the production of cotton. The term “ Cotton” is derived from Arabic origin. To mark the importance of cotton, World Cotton Day is celebrated on 7 October. The day allowed everyone to focus on the importance of cotton as a global commodity. This initiative was taken by WTO in 2019.
