Hint:Gingee is a site of an almost unreachable fortress constructed by the Hindu rulers of the Vijayanagar empire. Senji is situated about 130 kms southwest of Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In 1683, the fortress was captured from the Maratha chief Shahji by the Muslims of Bijapur. In 1677, Shahji’s son, Shivaji, recaptured the fort.

Complete answer:
Bijapur Sultan sent Mir Jumla to capture Senji. Between the 16th to 18th century, the Nayaks of Senji were rulers of the Ginjee nation of Tamil Nadu. They were assistants of the imperial Vijayanagara emperors and were appointed as regional governors by the Vijayanagara Emperor. The Siege of Jinji starts when the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb designated Zulfikar Ali Khan as the Nawab of the Carnatic and send him to lay siege and seize Jinji fort, which had been dismissed and captured by Maratha Empire troops led by Rajaram. They had also trapped and killed about 300 Mughal Sowars in the Carnatic. The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb then ordered Ghazi-ud-din Khan Feroze Jung I to shield the supply routes leading to Jinji Fort and to support and provide reinforcements to Zulfikar Ali Khan when needed. In recorded history, the siege of Jinji was the longest siege by any single Mughal Army. It lasts for about 8 years.

Hence, the correct answer is option (C).

Note:Zulfikar Ali Khan named Jinji Fort as ‘Nusrat Garh’ after it’s seizure, but the convicted Maratha leader Rajaram had somehow escaped earlier on during the siege, causing much shock for Zulfikar Ali Khan. However, the Mughal rule of Jinji finally opened the way for the formation of the governor of the Carnatic and the Sultanate of Mysore.
