Sangolli Rayanna struggle in the districts of Belagavi division played an important role in the struggle of India’s independence.
 He was born on 15 August 1798 in the districts of Belagavi in Karnataka. He was born in the family of Bharamappa Rogannavar (father) and Kenchawa (mother). He belongs to the Kuruba Gowda community.
He was the army chief of the Kittur kingdom ruled at the time by Rani Chennamma. She was one of the first female rulers to rebel against the British East India Company.
He participated in the rebellion of 1824 and fought against britishers. Later he got arrested by britishers but he was released soon. But he carried on the revolt against britishers. He wanted to make the Shivalingappa, the adopted son of Rani Chennamma and king Mallasarja as the king of Kittur kingdom. He started mobilising people and commenced the guerilla type of warfare against the britishers. He and his guerilla army travel to different places. They burnt british offices. They also waylaid british soldiers and looted british treasuries. British on their hand seized most of his land and imposed heavy taxes on his belongings. Whereas he taxed the landlords and made up an army from the mob.
The britishers could not beat him in the open battle,so by betraying him he was caught in April 1830. A trial commenced against him and he was sentenced to death. Rayanna was hanged to death from a Banyan tree in Nandagad on 26 January 1831.
