This technique is also used in ancient times and the process for extracting salt from sea water is termed as an ancient technology which involves evaporation ponds.
- In this technique shallow, water-proof ponds are dug out and connected to the sea by a short canal. A broad area and shallow depth allow a given volume of water to absorb more sunlight. When the pond is flooded then the canal is closed. The sunlight produced by the sun evaporates the water. As the water vaporizes the salt remains behind creating ever more saline water. In this technique most of the water evaporates and leaves behind a layer of sea salt crystals that can be further purified with the help of purification techniques.
