On September 11,1730 a very important landmark in India's environmental movement history took place. In 1730 ,in a small desert village in Jodhpur 363 Bishnoi people led by a brave women , Amrita Devi Bishnoi ,resisted the cutting down of 'Khejri' trees among others by the king's men preferring instead to lay down their own life rather than allow the desecration of their environment. The king wanted to cut the Khejri trees for wood as well as space for his new castle. Amrita after learning about this immediately hugged the trees to protect them but she was cut to pieces by the axemen.
After learning about this, the Bishnoi Committee people got enraged and followed her. Seeing the courage of the Committee the king gave up and the trees were saved. The Department of Environment and Forests declared September 11 as the National Forests Martyrs day in 2013. This movement acted as a catalyst in igniting more environmental movements like the Chipko Movement.
Note: Khejri trees are very important as they provide fodder to camels ,goats,and other animals. Its pods are edible and wood is used as fuel; it's roots fix atmospheric nitrogen, making soil fertile. This is very valuable to desert ecology and economics.
