Carbonate is a group that was formed by the combination of carbon and oxygen atoms. Carbonate is a group with a molecular formula of $ C{O_3}^{2 - } $ , as it is an anionic group. It can form bonds with metals and form a compound known as metal carbonate.
The general molecular formula of metal carbonate is $ MC{O_3} $ where M is metal with a general oxidation state of $ + 2 $ and carbonate has the oxidation state of $ - 2 $ .
Metal carbonate undergoes decomposition to form metal oxide along with the liberation of carbon dioxide. The general chemical reaction will be as follows:

But when the base consists of a carbonate group the liberation of carbon dioxide will take place. As metal carbonate is also a base which liberates carbon dioxide.
