The vertical column is called the group and the horizontal column is called the period. The period represents the number of shells or orbit of the particular element .The term block was first used by Charles Janet. The block represents the orbital in which the valence electrons or vacancies lie in. The number of electrons of an atom is given by the atomic number . But finally it was decided that it will be kept in the first group for convenience.
