Hint: There are two types of steel plants in India: mini steel plants and integrated steel plants. About half of India’s steel is produced by medium and small enterprises.
Complete answer:There are a total 10 primary integrated steel plants in India. The steel industry is among the most important industries in India. During 2014-16, India was the third largest producer of raw steel. In 2019, we became the 2nd largest steel producer in the world, China being the largest producer. The industry produced approx 82.68 million tons of total finished steel. Most of the steel in India is produced from iron ore.
Integrated steel plants are large and they handle everything in a single unit, from putting together raw material to steel making. Iron ore, coke, and flux after being heated are the main ingredients of steel making. There are five integrated SAIL plants in India
India’s National steel policy, 2005 has a long-term goal of having a modern and efficient steel industry of world standards. The focus is to achieve global competitiveness not only in terms of cost, quality, and product-mix but also in terms of global benchmarks of efficiency and productivity. This Policy aims to achieve more than 100 million metric tonnes of steel per year by 2019-20. In order to achieve this we need an annual growth of around 7.3% per year from 2004-05 onwards.
Note: This policy is governed by the Indian Ministry of Steel. This ministry is concerned with coordinating and planning the growth and development of the iron and steel industry, formulation of policies with respect to production, pricing, distribution, import and export of steel etc.
