Sound waves are, nothing but, vibrations of particles and air molecules travelling across the medium. The pattern of waves formed in the medium results in the sound produced by the wave. Sound waves possess distinct amplitudes and frequency which can interfere and form vibrations of various forms. The noise and pleasant sounds are basically the same – a sound wave. But the composition of this wave makes them different from each.
The pleasant sound is a discrete and well-maintained pattern of sound vibrations. They have very neatly composed beats, which has repetition in regular patterns over time. The noise, whereas, is the continuous and irregular pattern of sound, which lasts for a long time causing irritation. The noise is usually characterised by loud sound (high amplitude) and high pitch (high frequency) without any ‘musical sense or rhythm’.
This distinction between the pleasant sound and noise makes the former, acceptable and the latter, a distraction.
