Hint: Photoelectric effect is a phenomenon in which charged particles such as electrons are ejected out of a surface when a light of suitable frequency falls on them. This effect is the reason that Albert Einstein was able to explain the dual nature of light. This effect predicts the particle nature of light and Albert Einstein got nobel prize for this.

Complete answer:
The major role of photoelectric effect is in solar cells. Photoelectric effect is the best example for converting light energy into electric energy. This effect is the reason that we are able to convert solar energy into electricity. Now a day’s solar panels can be seen everywhere, from street lights to home or personal use. Some research is going on to make a vehicle which is powered by solar cells as the future is for electric cars.
There are many more applications for this effect such as light detection sensor, Pollution monitoring devices, and networking. The very basic use for this effect is the photocopy machine that we use in our everyday life.

Note:
Photoelectric effect works on the principle of quantum mechanics which states that electrons gain energy and try to reach higher atomic levels by gaining energy either in the form of heat or light. When these electrons drop down to the lower atomic levels, they release photons in the form of energy. In photoelectric effect photos are used to give a certain amount of energy to electrons that they get ejected from the surface. This minimum energy required to eject electrons from the surface is known as work function.
