The light-dependent reaction is responsible for the production of oxygen as the process starts with the conversion of light energy into chemical energy which leads to the release of some gases.
a)By the process of photolysis, water molecules are broken down by some amount of light energy and lead to the production of a proton (H+), electron(e-), and oxygen gas. To replace the lost electrons produced these are transferred to chlorophyll and this process is performed only in non-cyclic photophosphorylation.
b)The produced proton ions are released into the plant cell and as these produced products are the waste products of photosynthesis so the liberated oxygen is released back into the cell and then ultimately into the atmosphere.
c)As a part of photosynthesis, the oxygen molecule is released and does not come from carbon dioxide and as discussed above it is produced to provide the electron by splitting the water molecule and the produced one is an oxygen molecule, not an oxygen atom.
Note: This process of light-dependent reaction is done at the location of thylakoid membranes of a chloroplast as this is the reaction center where photon energy is transferred into the electron transport system.
