
When an object is placed $20\,cm$ from a concave mirror, a real image magnified three times is formed. Find:
(a) the focal length of the mirror.

Use magnification formula
$m = \dfrac{{{h_i}}}{{{h_o}}}$
$\Rightarrow m = \dfrac{{ - v}}{u}$
$\Rightarrow 3 = \dfrac{{ - v}}{u}$
$\Rightarrow v = - 3u$
Using mirror formula,
$\dfrac{1}{f} = \dfrac{1}{v} + \dfrac{1}{u}$
$\Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{{ - 3u}} + \dfrac{1}{u} = \dfrac{1}{{ - 15}}$
$\therefore u = - 10$ cm
