Hint :Nitric acid is oxyacid of nitrogen which has a chemical formula $ HN{O_3} $ . It is a colorless liquid. It is a protic solvent and a reagent in many chemical reactions. It is a very strong oxidising agent and can also be used as an oxidant. Nitric acid reacts with most of the metals but some metals do not react or dissolve in the nitric acid.
Complete Step By Step Answer:
Nitric acid as we know is one of the strongest acids and a very strong oxidising agent. The chemical formula of nitric acid is $ HN{O_3} $ . Almost all the metals react and dissolve in nitric acid but some of them do not.
Now, if we consider the given metals: Chromium, Magnesium, Manganese and Zinc.
Out of these metals, chromium is the metal which does not react with concentrated nitric acid because nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent and due to this a layer of oxide forms on the chromium metal and hence this layer does not allow the reaction between the chromium metal and nitric acid.
Hence, we can say that chromium metal option (A) does not react with nitric acid.
Note :
Nitric acid is prepared by the Ostwald process. It has many applications in many industries such as, it is used in the production of ammonium nitrate which is further used in fertilizers. It is also used to prepare explosives like TNT (trinitrotoluene) and for oxidising metals. It is also used to make dyes, plastic, etc.
