For producing the sound waves three things are required, firstly an object that creates vibration by striking it, secondly that body which vibrates on striking and last medium through which sound waves can travel because when an object strikes the vibrating body then vibrations are produced that develops sound waves which must travel through a medium, such as air or water, or any other medium made of atoms and molecules only.
In different mediums speed and intensity of sound will vary but sound cannot travel without medium that means it cannot travel through vacuum.
As we can prove experimentally that sound cannot travel through vacuum by doing a bell jar experiment, if we close an electric bell in tight container and remove all air from that container and then ring that electric bell we cannot able to hear its sound because the sound waves do not get any medium for travelling and as we open that jar sound is heard because it gets the medium now which shows that medium is required for sound propagation.
