Hint: Napoleon was a leader of the French military from the 19th century and an able emperor who ruled much of Europe. He was the ruler of France from 1804-1814. He assembled a great empire that was powerful and rich while leading France against a series of coalitions in the Napoleonic war.

Complete answer:
Napoleon ruled France after the political instability in the Directory of France rose and gave them a chance to rise to power. The Directory was made up of five members so that power did not come under one man but it eventually led to the military power to rule. He was born in the Italian family line, he was taught in France and turned into a military official in 1785. He battled in the French Revolutionary Wars and was elevated to brigadier general in 1793.

After triumphs against the Austrians in northern Italy, he arranged the Treaty of Campo Formio (1797). He endeavoured to vanquish Egypt (1798–99) however was crushed by the British under Horatio Nelson in the Battle of the Nile. Only Britain was left in 1803-1805 for Napoleon to rule but the British could easily defeat them by forming a continental coalition against him.

Napoleon still tried by making a coalition with Spain but they got defeated in the war. In 1808, French emperor Napoleon sent troops to Spain under the excuse of sending reinforcements to Portugal and thus started a peninsular war. An army of Britain came to expel the French from Spain and thus succeeded in sending the French troops back. After Napoleon broke Germany into 39 larger states and got a hold on it.

A war was fought against the French in 1813 and again in 1815, in which he got defeated. In 1815 he summoned a power and got back to France to restore himself as ruler for the Hundred Days, yet he was conclusively crushed at the Battle of Waterloo.

Thus, the correct option is (C). Napoleon declared himself as the emperor of France.

Note: After the defeat in the invasion of Russia in 1812, Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba. After stepping down from the throne 2 years ago. Napoleon died on May 5, 1821, at the age of 51 from stomach cancer.
