Once the industrial region was famous for the cotton textile industry. However now the economic base of Mumbai has been diversified. Even though textiles still remain important the other industries in the region include - petrochemical, automobile manufacturing, metals, electronics, engineering, food processing, and also a wide range of light manufacturing.
The most important industrial belt in the country is the Mumbai-Pune industrial belt and its origin can be traced back to the British rule in India. The growth of this region can be connected to the development of the cotton textile industry in India. Skilled and unskilled labour are provided by the coastal district of Ratnagiri. Vital connecting links are provided by the Thai Ghat and Bhor Ghat.
Even with the distance separating the two cities i.e. Mumbai and Pune but still the two cities constitute a functional economic region. The two cities are connected by a fast electrified rail line.
More than 6000 registered factories are present in Greater Mumbai and Pune houses about 1150 registered factories and is the second most important centre of the region.
