This phenomenon is known as resonance.It can also be defined as the state of a system in which a very large vibration is produced in response to an external stimulus, occurring when the frequency of the stimulus is almost the same as the natural vibration frequency of the system.

When a person is tuning his radio set to a particular station then it means the person is trying to match the frequency of the radio components with the broadcasting station he wants to receive and hence to produce resonance which makes sound louder. When the two frequencies match, due to resonance the energy of the signal of that particular frequency is received from the incoming waves. The signal received is then amplified in the receiver set.

Note: When the natural frequency of the body is equal to applied periodic force’s frequency then only resonance occurs. To find the resonant frequency of a single wave use the formula $v=\lambda f$ where $v$ is wave velocity, $\lambda $ is the wavelength and $f$ is the frequency.
