The President is elected by an indirect process. She/he is elected by an electoral college which includes the members of the parliament and the legislative assemblies of every state and Union territories. Article 55 of the Indian Constitution enables the members of the parliament as to how to elect the President of India. The members of parliament and state assemblies are elected directly i.e. by common people. The removal of the president can be done through a process of impeachment. As per Article 71(1), President of India can be removed by the supreme court for committing electoral malpractices. Motion for impeachment can be passed when the president has violated the constitution of India. The process of impeachment can be initiated in any house of the parliament- Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. This process starts when the charges are enlisted and one-fourth of the house signs and approves. A notice is then sent, and only after 14 days can it be considered for impeachment. In terms of the executive powers, the president has a little dependent role in the sense that he/she has to consider the advice of the Prime Minister and the respective council of ministers.
