Hint: Earth's crust is composed of Oxygen, Silicon, Aluminium, Iron and many others. Out of the elements which forms the composition of the earth’s crust, which is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust can be determined from knowing the percentage of these elements contributing in the formation of the earth crust.
Step by step answer:
The composition of the earth's crust is as follows:
40.6 percent oxygen, 27.7 percent silicon, 8.09 percent aluminium and 5% iron.
Next comes calcium which is 3.6 percent followed by sodium, potassium, magnesium and others.
From this composition it is very clear that the most abundant metal in the earth's crust and the third most abundant element there after oxygen and silicon is aluminium.
Therefore the answer to this question is aluminium.
Here is a diagram, which will give a clear idea about the composition of earth’s crust.
Additional Information: Aluminium occurs in igneous rocks chiefly as aluminosilicate in feldspar, feldspathoids and micas, in the soil derived from them as clay and the upon further weathering as bauxite and iron-rich laterite.
Bauxite, a mixture of hydrated aluminium oxide, is a principal aluminium ore.
Note: As we know aluminium is present as a component of the earth's crust, it combines with the other elements which are present in the earth’s crust in order to form compounds.
Two of the most common compounds which are formed after the combination of aluminium with the other elements present, are potassium aluminium sulphate and aluminium oxide.
