- Rice is considered as one of the chief grains of India where the largest area is covered by the cultivation of this crop. It is the most dominant crop in India which also makes it the leading producer of this crop. Rice is known to be a kind of tropical plant which grows in areas which receive heavy annual rainfall of more than 100 centimeters. It comes under the umbrella term kharif crop. The temperature for this crop ranges from 25 degree Celsius and above. It is also grown in those areas which receive comparatively less rainfall through the process of irrigation.
- Rice can be cultivated with the help of different methods but the traditional method is followed in India in which the field is ploughed and fertilizers are applied consisting of cow dung. Then, the field is smoothened and the seeds are planted manually which are cultivated through proper irrigation.
- The best suited soil for growing rice is clayey loam although it can be grown on a variety of soils like silts, loams and gravels. Most importantly rice acquires a good amount of water so proper care is to be taken regarding soil as it needs to be wet.
- In India the maximum cultivation of rice takes place in West Bengal. The other states where rice production takes place in good numbers are Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Haryana.

Note: Rice which are grown in well watered lowland areas are known as lowland or wet rice. Rice which are grown in hilly areas are termed as dry or upland rice. India is the leading exporter of Basmati rice in the world which is grown mainly in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand and Western Uttar Pradesh.
