The Indo-Gangetic Plain is also called the North Indian Plain. It is situated between the northern mountain and of the peninsular plateau and formed by three rivers - the Ganga, the Indus, and the Brahmaputra and tributaries.
The plain is divided into three divisions:
a. The Punjab Plains - it includes a major portion in Pakistan which is formed by Indus and also its tributaries- Beas, Chenab, Jhelum satluj, Ravi.
b. Ganges Plains - Haryana, Bihar, up Delhi some of the parts of Jharkhand and West Bengal also lie in the Ganga plains. It is the biggest part of the Northern Plains.
c. Brahmaputra Plains- They lie mainly in Assam made by the Brahmaputra and its tributaries.
The Northern plains can be divided into 4 regions :
a. The Bhabar region: It is the narrow region that lies in the foothills of the Himalayas and comprises pebbles and rocks as well and the rivers flow at a very fast rate in this region.
b. The Terai region: It is located just next to the Bhabar region and is built up of medium quality alluvium, which is good for cultivation.
c. The Bangar region: This region forms the highest part of plains and thus is made of older alluvium soil. This region of the Gangetic plains is majorly covered by Laterite soil.
d. The Khadar region: It lies in the lowland places. It is made up of newer fertile alluvium made down by rivers.
Note: Farming on this Indus-Ganga Plain generally consists of rice as well as wheat grown in the rotation. Other crops are also included such as maize, sugarcane, and cotton. Rainfall is Mainly from the southwest monsoon, sufficient for agriculture.
