Hint: The first person to propose the idea of the “assembly” was M.N. Roy in 1934. The Indian National Congress officially demanded the same in 1935.

Complete step by step answer:
The constituent assembly was the assembly that was formed for the purpose of drafting the constitution.
After a proposal by M.N. Roy, the Indian National Congress also realised the need for the assembly and hence officially demanded it. It was established under the Cabinet Mission Plan on 16 May 1946. The members of the Constituent Assembly were elected by the provincial assemblies. They followed elections through a single, transferable-vote system of proportional representation. After this election for 296 seats, the Muslim League which won 73 seats refused to cooperate with the Congress that had 208 seats under them. Therefore the demand for a separate nation grew and Pakistan was formed. In India, the Congress came to power. The constituent assembly was formed and held its first session on 9 December 1946. The constitution was drafted by a team of 299 delegates and among them, there was a wide range of diversity in terms of their religion, caste, gender and region. This drafting committee was chaired by B.R. Ambedkar. B.R. Ambedkar is known as the “father of Indian Constitution”. The president of the constituent assembly was Rajendra Prasad.

Note: It took the members of the drafting committee 2 years 11 months and 17 days which is almost 3 years, to draft the constitution of India. India’s constitution is considered the lengthiest in the entire world.
