Hint: This type of blood vessels take away deoxygenated blood from the right side of the heart to the capillaries of the lungs to exchange gas.
Complete Answer:
- Our body has a network of channels. These channels are called blood vessels. A blood vessel is a tube-like structure that carries blood. Oxygen-rich blood leaves the left side of the heart and reaches the aorta. The aorta is separated into arteries, which gradually branch into smaller arterioles.
- Arterioles deliver blood and oxygen to the capillaries. Blood vessels circulate blood throughout the body and help keep the blood flowing to and from the heart. Various kinds of blood vessels are found in our body. The three major blood vessels are: Veins, arteries, and capillaries.
- Capillaries are the microscopic blood vessels where the exchange of important substances and wastes occurs. These are the smallest blood vessels. A capillary wall permits easy exchange of minerals between the blood and body cells through the process of diffusion.
- The large blood vessels that carry away the oxygen rich blood from the heart are called arteries. These blood vessels are thick-walled, strong, durable, and elastic.
- The pulmonary arteries carry oxygen poor blood into the alveolar capillaries of the lungs from the right ventricle, which releases carbon dioxide and consumes oxygen. These are the only deoxygenated blood arteries considered to carry blood away from the heart.
- The short, large vessel divides into the pulmonary arteries left and right which provide the deoxygenated blood to each of the lungs. Blood passes through the pulmonary valve first, when it is expelled into the pulmonary arteries.
Note: The human circulatory system is two different blood flow systems, namely systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation. These are two separate blood flow systems. The adult human heart comprises the right side, the deoxygenated blood being pumped into the pulmonary circulation, and the left side, the oxygenated blood being pumped into the systemic circulations.
