Hint: The Non-Cooperation movement (1920-1922) was a peaceful and nonviolent movement led by the Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi in which people were asked to boycott foreign goods, elections, and foreign aid and government-aided schools. The aim was to attain Swaraj or Self-rule. The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre and the Rowlatt Act in 1919 resulted in bringing out the anger in Indians.

Complete Answer:
In the year 1920, Jamia Millia was founded by the Muslim nationalists named Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali (Ali Brothers), Hakim Ajmal Khan, and others in direct response to the Non-Cooperation Movement. In Urdu, Jamia means University and Millia means National. As its name suggests, its objective was to seed nationalism among Muslim youths and to provide modern education too. It came into prominence when Aligarh Muslim University barred its students and teachers from participating in the Non-Cooperation Movement. Then these Muslim nationalists founded this educational institute during that time. Initially, it was established in Aligarh and later on, shifted to Delhi. It has become a central University by an act of Parliament in 1988. Mahatma Gandhi tried to raise funds from industrialists during its financial crisis and encouraged Ajmal Khan not to close down the University while facing challenges.

Note: Jamia Millia University is often in news because of its students’ protest against CAA and other bills that affect their interests. It is one of the topmost universities in India known for its quality of education and progressive curriculum. The university has celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020.
