However one of the active stains of nagpuri Buffalo, Puranthadi, strain, is slightly brown in colour. The horns are long, flat and curved, bending backward on each side of the neck nearly up to the shoulders with the tips pointed mostly in upward direction. Average pointed height of nagpuri buffalo is 145 centimeter for male and 135 centimeter for female and heart girth for male is 210 and 205 centimeter for females.

Among the breeds of buffaloes, this breed stands better, mixing milk and draught qualities in a better proportion under adverse climatic conditions. The animals of this breed are very well suited to the harsh semi-arid conditions of the region of Vidarbha and can withstand severe climatic conditions of up to 47 degrees Celsius, including milk production and fertility conditions.
