Hint: In 1832-33, a United States Sectional political crisis was called the Nullification crisis. It involved the confrontation between the state of South Carolina and the federal government, during the presidency of Andrew Jackson.

Complete answer: The nullification Crisis, ensued after South Carolina declared the federal Tariffs of 1828 and 1832, which was a protective tariff designed to protect industry in the northern United States. These tariffs were unconstitutional and therefore null and void within the sovereign boundaries of the state.

Under the presidency of John Quincy Adams, the tariff of 1828, was enacted into law and faced opposition in the South, as it was perceived to put an unfair burden on south agrarian states. When the administration failed to address the concerns of the opposers, the radical section began to declare the tax null and void within South Carolina. In July, Andrew Jackson signed into law the Tariff of 1832, which received the support of most southerners and northerners in Congress but could not satiate South Carolina. Hence in 1832, a state convention adopted the Ordinance of nullification, which declared tariffs of 1828, were unconstitutional and unenforceable.
This led to the Nullification Proclamation, on $10^{th}$ December which threatened to send government troops to enforce the tariffs, but in March a new negotiated tariff, the compromise Tariff of 1833, which was satisfactory to South Carolina.
Therefore, option D is correct.

Note: The crisis was over and both northern and southern sides found reasons to celebrate, as the tariffs were reduced but the state rights doctrine of nullification remained controversial.
