Hint:The androgens are the hormones that are important for the functioning of the reproductive activity and in producing the male characteristics in an individual. They may be named as the male hormones but are found in both males and females.
Complete solution
The male reproductive system consists of a pair of testes. These testes are located in the sac-like structure called the scrotum. From testes, the seminiferous tubules are extended that consist of the male germ cells and the Sertoli cells. The seminiferous tubule also consists of blood vessels along with the Leydig cells in their exterior region. Leydig cells are the place where the male sex hormones collectively called androgens (major androgens synthesized in our body: testosterone, 5α-Dihydrotestosterone, dehydroepiandrostenedione (DHEA)) are synthesized. Testosterone is the most important androgen for males.
The function of androgens are as follows:
-Androstenedione is converted to testosterone in adrenal zona reticularis in males.
-In the development of both the male and the female traits the androgens play a very important role.
-Androgens are helpful in various biological activities but they play a major role in the activity of the reproductive system, the prostate, bone, muscle, adipose tissue, cardiovascular, hemopoietic, neural, and immune system.
-The growth and development of the male reproductive organs are mainly done by the androgens which play an important role in this biological activity.
-Androgens are also helpful in the development of the body hairs, development of adam’s apple resulting in the deepening of the male voice.
Note:
Hormones are chemical messengers that coordinate and control the activities of living organisms. It also controls its growth. The functions of all the organs are controlled by the hormones which are mostly steroids but mainly proteins. They are transported by circulatory systems and produced by endocrine glands. The hormones target the particular organs and help them in their metabolic activities.
