Bachendri Pal was born to the Botiya family on May 24, 1954 in Nakuri village, Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand district, India. She was one of five children of Hansa Devi, and Shri Kishan Singh Pal, a cross-border trader who sold food from India to Tibet. He was born just five days before the first celebration of the actual climb of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. He completed his MA with B.Ed. from D.A.V. Post Graduate College, Dehradun. He got his first taste of a 12-year-old mountain bike, along with his friends, climbed 13,123 feet during a school picnic. At the invitation of her school principal, she was sent to college to pursue higher education and while studying at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, she became the first girl in 1982 to climb Mt. Gangotri 121,889.77 ft and Mt. Rudragaria 19,091 ft. During that time, she got a job as a teacher at the National Adventure Foundation, which had established a hobby school to train women to study mountain.
