An Indian citizen can authorize for the post of Vice President if he is 35 years old or more and has to be entitled to be ordained as Rajya Sabha member. The Vice President holds office for a term of 5 years. During his tenure, the Vice President performs several functions:

- As the Vice President is the Chairman of the Council of States, he may cast his vote when there is a deadlock. He represents the Council of States on ceremonial events and is liable for safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the members of the Council of States.

- If the President is unable to perform his functions due to absence or the post of the President falls vacant or he resigns, then the Vice President performs all his duties until the appointment of a new President.

Note:
The first Vice President of India was Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. M.Venkaiah Naidu is the present Vice President of India who won against UPA's nominee Gopalkrishna Gandhi on 5th August 2017 election. The longest serving Vice President of India was Mr Hamid Ansari.
