Hint: India is home to an exceptional range of climatic regions, ranging from tropical in the south to temperate and alpine in the north of the Himalayas, where sustained winter snowfall occurs in elevated regions. The Himalayas prevent cold Central Asian winds from blowing in, along with the Hindu Kush mountains in Pakistan, holding the bulk of the Indian subcontinent warmer than other locations at comparable latitudes.

Complete answer:
Monsoon or rainy season in India lasts from June to September. The season is dominated by the humid southwestern summer monsoon, which starts in late May or early June and steadily sweeps across the region. Monsoon rains begin to recede in early October from North India. Usually, South India gets more rainfall.

The most active wet season on Earth is the southwestern summer monsoon, a four-month period when large convective thunderstorms dominate India's weather. The monsoonal torrents supply over 80% of India's annual rainfall, a result of southeast trade winds emanating from a high-pressure mass centred over the southern Indian Ocean.

There are two divisions of the southwestern monsoon: The Bay of Bengal branch and the Arabian Sea branch. The latter stretches across the Thar Desert into a low-pressure area and is approximately three times stronger than the branch of the Bay of Bengal. By around 25th May, when it reaches the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal, the monsoon usually breaks over Indian territory. Near the Malabar Coast of Kerala, it reaches the Indian mainland about 1st June. It hits Mumbai by 9 June; it appears above Delhi by 29th June. Initially tracing the Coromandel Coast northeast from Cape Comorin to Odisha, the Bay of Bengal branch swerves northwest toward the Indo-Gangetic Plain. The branch of the Arabian Sea heads northeast toward the Himalayas.

Note:
- The whole country experiences monsoon rain in the first week of July; on average, South India receives more rainfall than North India. Northeast India gets the most precipitation, however.
- The Thar Desert plays a role in attracting moisture-laden southwestern summer monsoon winds that provide most of the rainfall in India between June and October.
