The Supreme Court was established in the year 1937 on 1st October as a Federal Court of India under the Government of India Act, 1935 and in the year 1950 on 28th January it replaced the Federal Court as well as the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and became the Supreme Court of India. It is located at Tilak Marg, New Delhi. The Motto states – ‘Dharmastato Jayah’ which means where there is righteousness, there is victory.
The Chief Justice of India is regarded as the head and the Chief Judge of the Supreme Court and consists of maximum 34 judges. It is the most powerful public institution of India who has the extensive powers in original, appellate and jurisdictions. According to Article 133 of the Constitution an appeal is provided to the Supreme Court from the judgment of the High Court regarding civil matters such as:-
When the High Court declares that the case involves a material question of importance and when the High Court is of the opinion that the said questions are needed to be decided by the Supreme Court.

According to Article 124(4) of the Indian Constitution the President has the authority to remove a judge in case of misconduct or incapacity according to majority of members of the Parliament.
