Hint: A large prehistoric stone that has been used to construct a monument is called a Megalith. Algernon Herbert, a British antiquarian, used the word for the first time in 1849.

Complete answer:
A single piece of stone or more rocks of different shapes and sizes can be defined as Megaliths. These large stones and circles of stone boulders were mere indicators that there are burials beneath.
The practice of erecting Megaliths began about 3000 years ago. These were marked as burial sites and were carefully arranged. The practise was prevalent in South India, Deccan and in the north-east. These large stones were arranged in an interlocking system which created large structures and was fixed without using mortar or concrete.

Megaliths were constructed as commemorative memorials, with various things such as pots made of black and redware, tools made up of iron, skeletons and gold ornaments which probably belonged to the dead person. Some megalithic sites had more ornaments of gold and silver along with skeletons of horses, and horse equipment reflected the class differences of the Age. Archaeologists sometimes found a megalith containing more than one skeleton, which indicated that members of the same family were buried in the same place although not at the same time.

Note: Megaliths, stones had varied purposes and mostly were used by people belonging to different time periods. There are different names used for the stones, as the megalith walls are called Cyclopean walls and the stone circles are called “Cromlech”.
