Hint: In 1638, the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan set up Shahjahanabad on the western bank of the Yamuna River. The town is popularly referred to as Old Delhi and is a walled town. The construction of this town took almost a decade to complete.

Complete answer: (i) Shahjahanabad became the capital of the Mughal Empire until its decline in 1857. The city boasted of a large number of mansions, mosques, and gardens.
(ii) It was Shaped like a circle and the Red Fort was the point of focus of Shahjahanabad. The whole city was surrounded by a wall and had a total of 14 gates.
(iii) The main streets of Chandni Chowk and Faiz Bazaar were broad and were specially constructed for royal processions. There was also a water canal in Chandini Chowk.
(iv) The Jama Masjid which is also popular even today was one of the largest and most grandiose mosques in India. It was the largest mosque within the city of Shahjahanabad.
These are some important features of Shahjahanabad.

Note: Shahjahanabad is in present-day Old Delhi. Old Delhi is for the most part still confined within the area of Shahjahānabad’s walls, and several gates built during Shah Jahan’s rule like the Kashmiri Gate, the Delhi Gate, the Turkman Gate, and the Ajmeri Gate are still present today.
