A lysosome is a membrane-bound organelle that is found in many animal cells. They are composed of spherical vesicles that contain hydrolytic enzymes or lytic enzymes whose function is to break down various kinds of biomolecules.
These hydrolytic enzymes have the capability of digesting cells and unwanted materials. During unfavorable conditions, when the lysosome bursts, the lytic enzymes within the organelle splits up all over the cell, this leads to the rupturing of the cell membrane or cell wall and thus resulting in the death of the cell.
The lysosome will kill the organelle by its enzymes if it is damaged, and if the whole cell is damaged, then the lysosome will kill it by its enzymes, even itself. Because of this reason lysosomes are known as the suicidal bags of the cell.
Lysosomes act as the waste disposal mechanism of the cell by digesting unwanted materials in the cytoplasm. They are known to contain more than 600 different enzymes. These enzymes are synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and are then transported to the Golgi apparatus. These enzymes are then passed from the Golgi body to the lysosomes in small vesicles, which later fuse to form larger acidic vesicles.
