Hint: They had ruled on the Indian subcontinent from the years 1858 to 1947. This rule is also known as Crown rule in India, or direct rule in India. Until the independence of India and Pakistan in the year 1947, their direct rule was present in the country.

Complete Answer: In the late eighteenth century, the cities such as Bombay, Calcutta and Madras were established.
In the colonial cities of Madras, Bombay and Calcutta, the living spaces of Indians and the British had been sharply separated. At the time of this period, the crafts as well as the commerce underwent major big changes as merchants and artisans (such as weavers) had moved into the ‘Black Towns’ which had been formed by the European companies within these new cities only. The ‘blacks’ or native traders along with the craftspersons were confined here whereas the ‘white’ rulers had occupied the superior residencies like St. George Fort in the city of Madras or St. William Fort in the city Calcutta.
So basically the Indians lived in the “black” areas, whereas the British lived in the well-laid out “white” areas.

Note: At the time of the 18th century , there was visible the rise of Bombay, Calcutta and Madras that are considered as the nodal cities today-Crafts and commerce underwent major changes.
