HINT The person behind the Kuka revolt was initially a soldier in Sikh Army of Prince Naunihal Singh in the 1840s. He belongs to a section of Punjabis known as Kuka and so is the rebellion. The kukas were also referred as Namdharis and they started a group for purification in Sikhism. His policy of non-cooperation with British gained massive popularity that time among the masses of mainly Punjab.

The Kuka rebellion was led by Guru Ram Singh. Guru Ram Singh was born in 1815 to a poor carpenter in Bhaini Village, 7km away from Ludhiana. He joined Sikh army and grew to take responsibility for missionary work after the death of their former leader, Bhai Balak Singh.
Kukas believed in certain preachings like -
1. No caste system among sikhs
2. Widow remarriage
3. Encouragement of inter-caste marriages
4. Abstinence from meat, drugs and desi liquor
5. Adi Granth is the only true holy book of religion
6. Only white cloths

The Kuka rebellion marked the first major rebellion of people in Punjab towards the political order of British in 1849. They aimed at overthrowing the British Rule.was an act of political freedom. They worked upon the principles of non-cooperation and civil disobedience with the British. They boycotted the British education institutes and laws established by them, mill made clothes, imported goods, ie. boycotting everything that came with a British tag or stamp.

Note The civil disobedience and non-cooperation was adopted and introduced by Mahatma Gandhi in our Freedom Movement. The Kuka Movement made people aware of their serfdom and bondage evoking a feeling of sacrifice and self respect for the country. Later on Guru Ram Singh was imprisoned for life in Andaman and died on November 29, 1885.
