Macrophages form a part of white blood cells. They are responsible for providing innate immunity to the body. Every organ of the body consists of different types of macrophages that kill microorganisms, cancerous cells, and engulfs foreign particles through phagocytosis. Kupffer cells are found in the liver. The Kupffer cells are amoeboid in shape. They are present inside the liver sinusoidal cells. Organs for projection, like lamellipodia, pseudopodia and microvilli are present on the surface of kupffer cells which perform the function of endocytosis. Inside the body, lethal substances removal and their detoxification is carried out through the liver. Kupffer cells are the large cells that are found attached at the hepatic sinusoidal lining inside the liver. They play a major role in removing the debris and pathogens entering the small intestine via hepatic portal vein. Hence the kupffer cells form an important part of the mononuclear phagocyte system by constituting the major portion of the tissue macrophages found inside the body.
On the other hand, Islets of Langerhans cells are present in pancreas; intestinal macrophages are present in intestine while monocyte-derived macrophages are present in kidneys.
