Jaisalmer is a city in the state of Rajasthan and it is nicknamed as ‘The Golden City’. It is located 575km west of the state capital Jaipur. The city is crowned by the ancient Jaisalmer Fort and it stands on a yellowish sandstone ridge. There are several Jain temples and a royal palace. Finely sculptured sandstone can be witnessed in many of the houses and temples of both the fort and of the town below. It is situated in the heart of the famous Thar Desert and has a population of about 78,000. It was once the capital of the Jaisalmer State.
Rawals of Jaisalmer signed a treaty with the British in 1818 and were guaranteed the royal succession. It was one of the last Rajput states to sign such a treaty with the colonizers. During the colonial period, Jiasalmer was the seat of a princely state and was entitled to a 15 gun salute.
