The Chiefs were appointed by the colonial government from different sub-groups of Masai who were responsible for the affair made by the tribe. The Chief occasionally gained wealth. They also had a regular income with which they could buy goods, animals, and lands. They also used to pay money to their needy poor neighbors to make them able to pay the taxes. Many chiefs started living in town and started the trade. They also managed to face the devastation made by drought and war. British colonies had 3 types of colonies namely, the Royal colonies, Proprietary Colonies, and Self Governing colonies. Each of the colonies had their special characteristics.

The Royal Colonies were headed and owned by the King. The Proprietary Colonies were land grants from the British government. The land of these colonies was gifted by the king to the individuals, and they supervise and usually govern in return for political or financial favour. The Self Governing Colonies were formed when the king granted a charter to a company and the company set up its own government that was independent of the King. But the King had the right to abolish this colony anytime and convert it into Royal Colony. British indirect rule reduced political competition and softened the budget constraint of the chief.
